Her uncle Pike is back with his new boyfriend Devon to look after Tippy while her mum is on a cruise. When her teacherβs body is found, Tippy and her minds form The Nancys, a secret amateur detective club. But what starts as a binding and sightseeing adventure quickly morphs into something far more dangerous. . β’β’ I just adored The Nancys. I pretty much read it all in one sitting – but then wished I hadnβt because I wanted to stay in the company of Tippy, Uncle Pike and Devon for so much longer. For a book about a kid investigating her teacherβs fairly brutal murder, it is fun and energetic and joyous. Tippy is a great narrator, and none of the adults ever tone it down around her so their dirty jokes and double entendres are filtered through Tippyβs innocent lens, making some of the funniest passages of the book. The mystery is also gripping (I never guess whodunnit, Iβm just along for the ride and it was a great one), and I also really appreciated the focus on a loving, functional family. . . Like most people, I loved Uncle Pike and Devon, in all their camp, caring glory. I listened to an interview with McDonald where he talked about using the characters to celebrate camp and the bravery of men who are publicly camp, which can come with all sorts of discrimination and difficulties. It was a really lovely sentiment and one I hadnβt heard expressed much before (so often camp characters are used as the joke) and it made me love the characters and the book even more. . . I really hope The Nancys does well outside of Australia and NZ, as it really deserves to go far. For all the Aussies and Kiwis out there, go find yourself a copy. Itβs an utter delight, and Iβm honestly just waiting until Iβve forgotten enough of the plot that I can read it again! . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #readersofinstagram #bookstagramaustralia #aussiereader #librarybook #thenancys #rwrmcdonald #aussiebooks #kiwibooks #crimefiction #queerbooks #queerauthor #lgbtq #camp #dogsandbooks #π #bookishpodcaA post shared by R.W.R.
