Post @withrepost • 🙏💖💖💖💖💖 @a.shelf.of.books The Nancys – RWR McDonald 🔍 •• Tippy Chan is 11 and lives in a small town in a very quiet part of the world. Her uncle Pike is back with his new boyfriend Devon to look after Tippy while her mum is on a cruise. When her teacher’s body is found, Tippy and her minds form The Nancys, a secret amateur detective club. But what starts as a binding and sightseeing adventure quickly morphs into something far more dangerous. . •• I just adored The Nancys. I pretty much read it all in one sitting – but then wished I hadn’t because I wanted to stay in the company of Tippy, Uncle Pike and Devon for so much longer. For a book about a kid investigating her teacher’s fairly brutal murder, it is fun and energetic and joyous. Tippy is a great narrator, and none of the adults ever tone it down around her so their dirty jokes and double entendres are filtered through Tippy’s innocent lens, making some of the funniest passages of the book. The mystery is also gripping (I never guess whodunnit, I’m just along for the ride and it was a great one), and I also really appreciated the focus on a loving, functional family. . . Like most people, I loved Uncle Pike and Devon, in all their camp, caring glory. I listened to an interview with McDonald where he talked about using the characters to celebrate camp and the bravery of men who are publicly camp, which can come with all sorts of discrimination and difficulties. It was a really lovely sentiment and one I hadn’t heard expressed much before (so often camp characters are used as the joke) and it made me love the characters and the book even more. . . I really hope The Nancys does well outside of Australia and NZ, as it really deserves to go far. For all the Aussies and Kiwis out there, go find yourself a copy. It’s an utter delight, and I’m honestly just waiting until I’ve forgotten enough of the plot that I can read it again! . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #readersofinstagram #bookstagramaustralia #aussiereader #librarybook #thenancys #rwrmcdonald #aussiebooks #kiwibooks #crimefiction #queerbooks #queerauthor #lgbtq #camp #dogsandbooks #🌈 #bookishpodca

Author Event – Katherine Kovacic & R.W.R. McDonald in-conversation

Another night of great crime writing conversation at Brunswick Bound Upstairs in August.

Katherine Kovacic (Painting In the Shadows) and Rob McDonald (The Nancys) will be in discussion about their books, their writing journey and more.

We love it when good friends (with dastardly imaginations) get together to talk books, and this promises to be a criminally entertaining evening.

Katherine Kovacic is a former veterinarian turned art historian who works with a wide variety of museums, galleries and historic houses. She lives in Melbourne with a Borzoi and a Scottish Deerhound. The Portrait of Molly Dean was her debut novel and the first Alex Clayton art mystery.

Rob McDonald is a Kiwi living in Melbourne with his two daughters and an extended family of two baby mommas, an estranged cat, Flower, and Stevie Nicks the chicken. Rob attended Faber Academy’s Writing a Novel Stage 1 and Stage 2 and an excerpt of The Nancys was published in the Faber Writing Academy ‘Writing a Novel’ Anthology, Allen & Unwin (2016). Rob realised while studying journalism that writing fiction, rather than reporting facts, was his true bent. The Nancys was Highly Commended for an Unpublished Manuscript in the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.

Check out the Brunswick Bound website for other forthcoming events.
