Happy Publication Day to Peter Coleman & Matt Fowles

Happy Publication Day to @petercolemanauthor @fowles_wine WEEKENDS WITH MATT. I got to interview Peter on QWS Podcast and ask him all about this great and unique book which is a mix of wine, philosophy and a wonderful representation of a lasting friendship between a gay man and a straight man, something which is not depicted nearly enough.

The ‘peacock’s tail’ is used to describe a wine that is wonderfully complex and ultimately rewarding. Surely there’s no better metaphor for life.

Weekends with Matt is a classic odd-couple tale of two very different men and the common ground that can be found over a shared passion.

It was at the bottle shop, somewhere between the chardonnay and the zinfandel, that Peter realised he didn’t have a clue about wine. On his way to a dinner party and in a mild panic, he called Matt, a wine-loving acquaintance who expertly steered him towards the perfect bottle. The selection was a hit, but it was Matt’s passion that stuck in Peter’s mind. He decided to visit Matt’s vineyard for an introduction to the noble grape. One visit led to another and this unlikely pairing of a Proust-quoting intellectual and a farmer with a love of hunting found themselves bonding over life, ideas, vulnerability, aspiration, nature, philosophy – and, of course, a glass or three of wine.

Signed My First Picture Book with Larrikin House

Absolute dream!!

Hot off the press! Award-winning crime author RWR McDonald has signed his very first picture book with Larrikin House!

In the same spirit of his crime novel The Nancys, which won Best First Novel in the 2020 Ngaio Marsh Awards & shortlisted for the 2020 Ned Kelly Awards, his debut picture book includes a warped sense of humour that can only be described as joyfully dark!

THE WRONG WOMAN is another great book from @jppomare & what I hope is the first of many adventures for a new Private Investigator character, Reid.

I was privileged to witness THE WRONG WOMAN story creation from the beginning & saw the effort @jppomare took in creating Reid, his first gay male main character.

For this post I asked @jppomare who identifies as heterosexual, where his protagonist Reid’s sexuality came from – was it @jppomare intention before he started writing that he was going to have a gay male character lead, or did he discover it as he wrote the story?

“As I learned more about Reid it made perfect sense. Conscious of, and scary, when I realised it would be worse to change him… to sacrifice that part of him out of my own fear of getting him wrong.”

I love Reid as a lead, & appreciate the time, effort & respect @jppomare took in educating himself, avoiding lazy tropes to develop a nuanced gay male character. Hopefully this is the first of Reid’s adventures.

Congratulations @jppomare and thanks for bringing Reid out into world. THE WRONG WOMAN is out @hachetteaus 27th July.

Excited to receive my IRL 📚copies of DARK DEEDS DOWN UNDER – thanks Lindy! And to have a Nancys short story published in such stellar #CrimeFiction company🤩. Thanks @craigsisterson & @clandestine press – Anthology out now 📚
